Pepperfry Indian Kitchen is serving a Dussehra Special Aritaku Bhojanam, a traditional South Indian banana leaf meal, on Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25 at 1350 Matheson Blvd E, Unit 10B, Mississauga. All food is 100% halal. Reserve your table here.
What Is Aritaku Bhojanam?
Aritaku is the Telugu word for banana leaf, and bhojanam means meal. Aritaku Bhojanam is a full feast served on a fresh banana leaf instead of a plate. Rice sits at the center, with small portions of curries, dal, chutneys, pickles, fries, and sweets arranged around it.
Banana leaves have been used for serving food across South India for generations. They are natural and easy to clean, and many people feel they add a subtle aroma to hot rice. The leaf also makes the meal feel like an occasion, which is why it is a favorite at weddings, temple festivals, and family celebrations.

Why Dussehra Calls for a Feast
Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami, celebrates the victory of good over evil. Families mark it with prayers, new beginnings, and a big shared meal. If you live far from home, or your family is spread across Ontario, a leaf meal is one of the easiest ways to bring that feeling back.
Cooking a full banana leaf spread at home takes a lot of planning. You need several curries, a dal, chutneys, a sweet, and the right rice, all ready at the same time. Our kitchen does that work, so you can spend the festival with your people.
What Is on Your Leaf
Your Dussehra Special Aritaku Bhojanam includes:
- [List the items: e.g. rice, dal, sambar, rasam, vegetable curries, a fry, chutney, pickle, papad, curd, sweet]

How to Enjoy a Banana Leaf Meal
If you are new to Aritaku Bhojanam, here is a simple way to approach it:
- Start small. Try a bit of the pickle, chutney, and sweet on the leaf.
- Mix rice with dal. Many people add a little ghee for richness.
- Move to the curries. Enjoy them with rice, one at a time.
- Finish light. Curd rice is a traditional way to end the meal.
It is traditionally eaten by hand, but you are always welcome to ask for a spoon. There is no rush.
